Socratic seminars are meant to be mature discussions of material. They are for the purpose of gaining greater insight on a topic and coming to a more sophisticated understanding of others' points of view. While it is not required that all participants agree or hold the same opinion, it is essential that all participants feel valued as a discussion member.
The scoring rubric used in English 9,10 is based on a five point scale. Essentially, the participants receive up to three points for general comments/clarifications/content analysis. Once the three points are reached, a student must earn the last two points by intentional inclusion of others into the discussion (one point), OR by an exceptional insight or mature diffusion of tension(one point). Students should strive for deeper understanding of content (see DOK chart below).
Depth of Knowledge (DOK)
Extemporaneous speeches are simply imprompto speeches with little preparation time. Students must address the topic(s) given and present a speech for at least a minute.
