Narrative Writing
When writing a narrative, it is your story so use 1st person pronouns (I, me, we, our, etc.). Narratives are most often set in the past - so use past tense verbs. Some narratives could be in the present, or set in the future. Be sure to identify the time frame of your narrative so that you choose and appropriate verb tense. Make your topic narrow enough that you can include sensory language and detail. As with other types of writing, you will need a thesis (main idea, focus, opinion). The rest of your paper will support your thesis, then conclude naturally, in your last paragraph.
Remember that your reader is learning about the experience in your paper from you, the author. Use enough detail and support that the reader can understand and appreciate your writing.

Memoir
A memoir is a type of personal narrative which focuses on a specific item or moment in the author's life. These will be more descriptive than just a narrative. Rather than tell a story, this paper will tell about the object or moment.
Character Comparison
Another type of narrative writing is a character comparison. Be sure to read the directions because sometimes these can be both comparing AND contrasting, or simply just comparing. Important to note - the NARRATIVE character comparison is in relation to you, the author. There are EXPOSITORY character analysis papers that are not based on YOU, but rather the character from the story. Whenever, YOU are in the assignment, it is a narrative.
